he arrives at the gym with his aerodactyl carrying him by his shoulders. the fossil drops him off at the sanctuary's entrance before kyle recalls it back to its ball. he'd need him later, probably, but not now.

out of all the gyms that he has been to, rustboro's seemed to be the least flashy out of all of them, with fortree contending to be the top alongside mauville. he supposed this gym gets a pass since it doubles as a sanctuary.

he steps onto the entrance, knocking twice before opening the door that led to the arena. it was an open roof, which meant he could have landed inside anyways, but kyle has enough decency to use the normal people route. stepping in, his eyes tries to look for the gym leader before he calls out within.

"i'm here for the challenge."

If Kyle were to listen hard enough, he’d hear…something seemingly flying through the air. While the sounds weren’t outright crying yet, there was a sniffling kind of racket and it was definitely headed in the young man’s direction![break][break]

There was a literal blue blob seemingly floating lazily through the air, looking for something—or someone—to latch on to and shower with affection. The problem was that sometimes, the way she showered her affection proved to be a little too much, to the point that she would end up accidentally suffocating whoever she chose to latch on to.[break][break]

Whoops.[break][break]

Anyway, a small blue blob would come down, circling around the canid-scented man a few times before just…hovering near his face. Now, if Kyle were to try and chuck a Pokéball at her, it would just bounce back, the little Water-type glowing red—because she already had a particularly squishy Dive Ball to call her own.[break][break]

It didn’t take too long before the sounds of exasperated shouting would echo throughout the place. What with the gym literally being open-air, the sound would definitely carry.[break][break]

“Zelle! Where did you run off to this time?!” said voice would be calling out, cutting off and whistling sharply a few times. She didn’t like being forced into her Dive Ball, the few times she went in was because he’d forced her to—most times her ‘guardian’ would tap the button on her sleeping form.[break][break]

“Zelle! Seriously, I swear if you’re harassing one of the staff in the clinic again—“ the same voice continued, and before long a rather tall man would come walking into view, shedding off his jacket and tying it around his waist. “If you’re running away from me because you don’t want to get into the Dive Ball, then you’ve got something—“ he added a few moments later, just about ready to throw his hands up in mock annoyance when he saw that he wasn’t alone.[break][break]

“Oh. Shit. Uhhh,” he began, embarrassed.

he wasn't sure what hovered in his face, but kyle would instinctively reach for the blob, grabbing it indiscriminately on its face. the palm would be big enough to get a reasonable hold of the unknown pokemon.

it was just a systematic thing he'd do to his pokemon, which was to use brute force whenever they were acting against his liking. it didn't take long for kyle to realize that what he was grabbing was not his, and that it most likely belonged to the gym leader.

most importantly, it was from a species he does not recognize.

"you're, uh..."

he'd try to search for the answer on his own despite knowing that he has not encountered it from before. he'd give up afterwards though, head tilting to random directions before shouting for attention.

"hey! gym leader! you here?! your thing is..."

“Oh, hell, what did she do to you?” Alexei began, approaching the other and quickly freeing the sniffling little Water-type from the other’s hold. “Did she try to latch on your face or anything like that? I already told her that she’s not allowed to harass anyone else…” he continues, exasperation clearly in his tone.[break][break]

“At least she didn’t try to smother you. Nice catch,” he went on, pulling out a Dive Ball and tapping on the little Phione’s head as it tried to squirm and break free of his own hold. “No, Zelle, you’re staying inside,” he admonished the sniffling noise, and just as it was about to become a full-out wailing cry the red beam of light shot out and sucked her back into the Dive Ball.[break][break]

“Sorry about that. So you, uh, want the challenge, right? Follow me.”[break][break]

Down and through the area they went, finally reaching an open-air field with the standard-issue League markings traced on a cement platform.[break][break]

“Singles, three on three—are you fine with that?” he asked the other, reaching into his pocket and pulling out something that looked like a singular, multi-sided die. With a swirling, nebulous design, he quickly tossed it up into the air and caught it, palming it quickly before looking over where his first…challenger stood.[break][break]

“There’s actually four ways of earning my badge, and—I hope you’re ready for the unexpected,” he explained shortly.[break][break]

"thanks?" he'd respond, obviously confused by the interaction. "i had, uh, a lot of practice."

what was that anyways?

the pokemon was nothing he know of-- and he had always prided himself on knowing the most basic things when it came to pokemon. the disbelief got him scratching his head as he absently followed the gym leader to where the match will take place.

the battlefield was something he imagined a flying-type gym would be like. it did not surprise him that much, though what did was what followed after being showed where the action would take place.

"yeah, i'm fine with it, but..."

the gym leader tossed a dice in the air, eyes of disbelief watching how the events unfolded before him. it was... unique? definitely different compared to the ones he had challenged before, which were all too straightforward.

"wait, four ways? then... what's gonna happen now?"

“…seems to me that my luck isn’t favoring you, either,” he mutters, mostly to himself before pocketing it and looking back at the other. “See, you might think of me as the Flying-type leader, but that’s not exactly correct. I’m more on flying as a theme, if you catch my drift. It’s also the reason why my gym’s open-air… because the other three options would’ve been me using non-Flying types, or a Sky Battle and, if luck favored you, an aerial jousting match,” he explained.[break][break]

Although he wasn’t game on giving away how to unlock the other three options, at least not yet.[break][break]

Reaching for a thin chain around his neck, he fished out a thin whistle, and blew a single note on it. While normally he’d have decided to start strong with either Kyouya or Gabriel right out of the gate; he figured, give the other the benefit of the doubt first.[break][break]

He knew that the other avians under his care would come to watch around, and slowly but surely various Flying-types began landing near the arena—if Kyle had missed it, then there were several free-standing perches, and each slowly were occupied by the fliers under his care.[break][break]

While the Salamence and the Braviary looked ready to fight, he spared the two a glance before shaking his head at them before the little happy orb… well, not so much of an orb anymore Togetic flew forward and took her place.[break][break]

“Feel free to go first,” he adds a few moments later.[break][break]

this wasn't the lucky roll?

a no strings attached single battle may have been bland and boring, but a sky battle wouldn't be favorable at all. the mention of an aerial jousting match got him to recall mateo martinez 's tendencies, to which he did not have any fond memories of such activity.

the match starts with alexei calling out his togetic.

"just what i need," he'd respond after he was given the first move. "thanks."

the fairy-type would cause kyle to click his tongue. his hand had already readied itself into plucking out his mightyena's ball out of its roster, but he supposed he'd have to hold onto that for now. fingers moved a few centimeters to the right to choose a different one.

"zeke!"

a lycanroc would emerge from the capsule by kyle's hands, standing his ground with eyes staring down the togetic in front of him. the canine knows what he was called for, especially since his trainer usually just needs him for one thing.

"stealth rocks!"

pointed stones would rise from the ground, levitating in the air and threatening to hurt any sudden movements made by switching in and out of the battlefield.

His eyebrows went up slightly, because he knew that his Togetic had the one true randomizer of all time—and while in most cases it was a fucking gamble, there were some times that it would land right on the mark. But he’d decided to throw caution to the wind.[break][break]

Have to be careful around there, now. Hope my luck doesn’t fucking suck… he thought, before waving his hand forward. “Let’s see if we’ll get lucky the first time—wag your finger for me!”[break][break]

Either way, the Togetic was more than alarmed to see the floating rocks, before doing some kind of shimmying—wait, was she wiggling her ass? “Tat, no, not the butt!” he called out, smacking a palm to his face as he saw the beginning of what appeared to be a spastic movement by the Togetic, before he closed his eyes and prayed to whatever fucking deity was out there that he wasn’t going to get smacked with an ineffective move.[break][break]

However…[break][break]

Instead of hearing a crackling or a burning sound, it was… did he dare look up?[break][break]

Maybe the deities had saved their luck for this moment, because he saw the Togetic using Rapid Spin—and while it wasn’t that effective on the canid on the opposite side of the field, it did bring one advantage—the floating rocks were cleared away.[break][break]

Holy… he thought, blinking, before seeing that there was an opening! “Tat, shred it!” he followed up, before the Togetic turned back and looked at him, a little confused.[break][break]

“Oh, you know—the leaves!” he added a few moments later. Shit. That was one of the moves they hadn’t properly rehearsed yet![break][break]

Nodding, the dinky little dual-type turned to face the scary-looking canid across the arena before spinning around in mid-air, releasing glowing green projectiles which shot through the space, heading right at the other Pokémon![break][break]

at this point, kyle wasn't sure if he'd consider himself lucky or not. the move wasn't as devastating as a hydro pump or a frenzy plant, but it definitely negated the last move that his lycanroc did.

kyle wouldn't allow that.

"shield yourself! stone edge!"

the togetic had sent forth magical leaves towards the rock-type. taking heavy damage at the start wasn't favorable for him at this point of battle. defense was the best option kyle could consider instead of retaliating with an inaccurate move.

sharp plates of rocks would emerge from the ground, appearing in all angles surrounding the lycanroc so that it shields him from all sides. the slight delay from the commands gave the rock-type the time to prepare for a thicker variation of the move, thankfully.

"and another round of stealth rocks," he'd call.

the next thing that happened was a calm, cool and collected figure of the canine smashing the little shelter it created with its fists. the shrapnel that came from the debris exploded from the impact, going off on all angles before floating to take place of the stealth rocks that had been cleared away.

hopefully, that's the last time he'd have to set those up.

what's next? metronome's going to call defog or something?

"you're... are you going easy on me, right?" he'd confront, considering the pokemon in front of him that perhaps lacked sufficient training. "not that i mind though. actually, forget i said that."

“Would you feel better if I told you I was saving my better Pokémon for later?” he said with a bit of a mischievous grin on his face, in answer to the last question posed.[break][break]

Hiding the little groan as the same rocks that he’d managed to banish before reappear again, he had…a slight suspicion that there was something going to happen. But he’d only heard about this in passing, from stories—he didn’t know it would be an actual reality.[break][break]

“Tat. Come on, try harder! Metronome again!” he called out from his side of the arena, and while the Togetic was pretty much alarmed at the reappearance of the rocks, she knew she had one chance to get this right. Hopefully that one chance would be able to send this spiky rock dog packing.[break][break]

Hushed silence of a few moments ticked by, before he watched the Togetic fly close to the ground—and he’d braced himself. Normally, he knew that when it wasn’t a Flying-type that was capable of landing they would end up slapping their tails on the ground to use that one attack he knew would rip a new number on the other—[break][break]

However, it wasn’t Earthquake. It was something close enough, however![break][break]

He was surprised not to see an Earthquake, but his cute-ass Togetic literally throwing a Stomping Tantrum around—was the move going to hit harder, because of the Magical Leaf from earlier failing? He didn’t know! Either way…[break][break]

“Alright, make a Wish, hope it comes true later!” he adds a few moments later, and after witnessing the little epic angry moment the Togetic had, a silent prayer said to the sky, hoping that it would land in time…[break][break]

experience in a gym told him that scaling the gym leader's next pokemon depending on the challenger's level was normal practice. he wasn't going to question it much since he understood the reason behind.

kyle tries to anticipate the next use of metronome. uncertainty was always his enemy and luck was not always on his side. the only weapon he has for it was adaptability, but even then, luck has all the power to turn that around for him. he holds off for his next move until alexei calls for it.

and then he does.

there were no explosions or anything of that nature after the move was called. the togetic gives up its aerial advantage for a moment, however. kyle is initially confused, until he feels vibrations on the ground. he hurriedly calls for the next move for his rock-type.

"zeke, vault!"

the lycanroc had been affected already, teetering on his feet, before he could do as he was commanded. a stone edge erupts from the ground, pushing him forward towards the direction of the grounded togetic. leaping forward, he goes on a trajectory that would lead him directly on top of it.

"strike."

once he lands, large jagged stone edges would erupt from the ground, flying and spraying in an upwards direction.

He may or may not have made some miscalculations when it came to that Metronome. At best, he knew that his Togetic’s moves were subpar—but he had his reasons for not making her into a Togekiss. Not just yet anyway. He wasn’t sure if the other was playing dumb or something, but well—he was surprised to see that the Lycanroc had already charged forward on a Stone Edge, before a barrage of another came rising up and out of the ground![break][break]

“Tat! Try to get out of the way!” he shouted from the other side, seeing the multiple incoming Stone Edge attacks coming from the ground, and the little dual-type lets out a shriek of alarm at the incoming rocks.[break][break]

Ah, shit, disadvantage! He thought in a panic, watching as the spiky rocks loomed up and threatened to swallow the Togetic. He knew that the Togepi line were particularly squishy, but who knew if he had a chance in hell to survive it?[break][break]

As the dust cleared out, he was…not surprised to see that he was one Pokémon down at this point. Rolling out the pink Love Ball the Togetic came in, he recalled the downed dual-type, and hoping that his decision to send out one of his better fighters so soon wasn’t going to bite him in the ass, switched gears and threw a Dusk Ball forward, from its depths burst out an Aerodactyl.[break][break]

Alarmed that there were signs of Stealth Rock on the field, the prehistoric Fossil ‘mon let out a surprised cry of pain before shooting forward, well clear out of the annoying things.[break][break]

“Terra. You—I trust you on this. Iron Head!” he called out at the Aerodactyl, watching as the Fossil ‘mon struck forward, baring down its head and bracing itself for the powerful impact. “Agility right after!”[break][break]

Whether or not the Iron Head would hit, the Aerodactyl would then boost itself backwards, using Agility to put some distance between himself and whatever else would come sweeping out on the other side of the field.[break][break]

one down, two to go...

the lycanroc beats the togetic thanks to type advantage. the togetic is recalled back to its ball as the dust settled. it was only then that kyle had realized that the ground-type move had still affected his pokemon despite the maneuver it pulled off. his pokemon's panting was hard to ignore at this point.

an aerodactyl replaces the togetic in the field. kyle knows fully well of its capabilities from owning one of them. it was at this moment he realizes that his lycanroc wouldn't last long and needs to have a last stand.

"reversal!"

the stealth rocks functioned as a deterrent besides being an entry hazard. it gives the lycanroc enough time to prepare a blow while the prehistoric beast was preoccupied with it. the aerodactyl dashes soon afterwards, to which the lycanroc tries to retaliate with a punch.

despite its last ditch effort, it falls to iron head anyways.

he held a straight face for a moment or two, before recalling the downed canine back to its ball. kyle took no moment to ponder on his next choice, choosing the pokeball without much thought on it.

"you can have your time to shine for now, i guess."

a mightyena replaces the lycanroc, howling gleefully at the opportunity given to him. he had been ignoring alpha in favor of his actually useful mightyena for a while after all.

The call on Iron Head was a guess at best, but otherwise it was a good one since the Lycanroc that had down his Togetic fell not too long after. Thank fuck I called him backwards with Agility, what the hell was that attack that came from out of nowhere? He thought as finally, finally one of the famed Mightyena he knew the other one was known for made an appearance.[break][break]

Now, the problem was—did this one know a certain move he hoped it didn’t, because otherwise there would be a massive problem.[break][break]

Even if he knew the Aerodactyl had put space between himself and the Lycanroc, there was a pained roar that came from the flying Fossil ‘mon as it scooted backwards. He didn’t know how much the last attack had hurt the Aerodactyl, but now that Terra was at a safe distance from the Mightyena, he decided to take the offense into his own hands.[break][break]

“Terra, Rock Slide, and make it double!” were the only words he said afterward.[break][break]

Let’s see how you’ll deal with all these incoming rocks! He thought as the Aerodactyl let out another screeching roar, before summoning not one, but two simultaneous avalanches of boulders that began to rain down on all sides on the opposite side of the field.[break][break]

he wasn't sure what to do with alpha, if he was to be honest with himself. he doesn't have tricks such as bravo, delta and echo, nor did he have the versatility of charlie or foxtrot. he was just... there.

he'll make him work. somehow.

"alpha, mist."

a culmination of utilizing both fire fang and ice fang would create a blanket of thick fog in the area. with close to zero visibility in the field, both trainers wouldn't be seeing anything for a while. alpha, who doesn't have to rely on sight, would be in the advantage for now.

rock slide went from all sides, cornering the mightyena into a compact space. should he not move anytime soon, he would be knocked out before he could even do anything relevant. there only was one direction to dodge the incoming attacks, no matter how improbable it was.

"go up."

his voice would be the only clue the aerodactyl and its trainer would have with the mightyena's actions.

bounding his muscles, the dark-type would leap a few feet up into the air to avoid the flood of rocks that would fill the arena. there were no sounds of his paws landing back to the ground, however. he wasn't on top of the aerodactyl either.
